Build a scheduled daily weather-log workflow in n8n

Oli Morris builds an n8n workflow that fetches Berlin's weather at 8 a.m. every day, turns it into a one-line report and saves it to a data table, first by prompting the n8n Assistant, then node by node by hand.

Build a scheduled daily weather-log workflow in n8n — video by n8n▶ Watch on YouTube
Prompt
Build a workflow called Weather Log that runs every day at 8:00 a.m. Get the weather for Berlin from this URL: <your weather API URL>. Add a report field with the city, temperature and conditions, for example "The temperature in Berlin is 10 degrees C and it's currently overcast." Then save the data to a new data table.

Visual breakdown

Oli Morris builds the same workflow twice in n8n: once by prompting the n8n Assistant, once by hand. It runs every morning at 8:00, fetches Berlin's weather, formats a one-line report and saves it to a data table.

The problem: You want a small automation that runs on its own every day, and you want to understand how n8n workflows actually work.

The Berlin weather workflow, node by node

  1. Schedule triggerStarts the workflow every day at 8:00 a.m., renamed "Every day at 8:00 a.m."
  2. HTTP RequestCalls the weather endpoint and returns city, date, temperature, humidity, wind, conditions
  3. Edit FieldsAdds a report field using expressions like {{ $json.city }} dragged from the input
  4. Data table: Insert RowMaps the incoming report to a Report column automatically
  5. Published workflowAdds a new weather row each morning once published

Concepts explained

  1. A workflow is a collection of connected nodes; a node does one action
  2. An expression is a snippet swapped for its real value at run time
  3. All data in n8n is a JSON object passed from node to node
  4. Rename nodes as you go so the workflow reads clearly

By the numbers

Build it yourself

Do it once with the n8n Assistant, then once by hand to see what happens on the canvas.

  1. In n8n Assistant, write the prompt: workflow name, 8:00 a.m. schedule, weather URL, report format, save to a data table
  2. Allow the Assistant's permission requests, including creating the data table and a test run
  3. Check the data table for the new row, then ask the Assistant to publish it
  4. By hand: add a Schedule trigger at 8:00 a.m., an HTTP Request node, and an Edit Fields node
  5. Create a data table with a Report column and add an Insert Row node with automatic mapping
  6. Execute end to end, rename the workflow and press Publish

Published workflows run on the schedule you defined.

Tips from the video

  • Rename nodes as you go so each one says what it does.
  • Use Execute step on each node to check its output before moving on.
  • Drag fields from the input panel to build expressions instead of typing them.
  • A workflow that isn't published won't run on its schedule.
  • The Assistant asks permission before acting, and offers to run a test.
