Build an interactive Excel sales dashboard with Copilot in two prompts — video by Kevin Stratvert▶ Watch on YouTube
Prompt
Create a professional, interactive sales dashboard using the data in this workbook. Include key sales metrics, charts showing sales trends and performance, and interactive filters so I can explore the data. Put everything on a new worksheet.

Then: Redesign the dashboard with a modern dark theme using navy blue backgrounds, gold accents, and high-contrast white text. Keep the existing layout, charts, metrics, and interactive filters fully functional. Make sure all labels and charts remain easy to read.

Visual breakdown

Kevin gives Copilot in Excel one prompt and gets a full interactive sales dashboard: key metrics, charts and filters on a new sheet. He verifies the totals against the raw data, restyles it with a second prompt, and shows it updating when a new order is added.

The problem: Building charts, calculations and interactive filters by hand in Excel takes a lot of manual work.

From a sales sheet to a live dashboard

  2. Open CopilotClick the Copilot icon and keep Allow Editing selected
  3. Prompt 1: buildCopilot picks metrics and charts and builds a dashboard sheet
  4. Verify numbersFilter the orders to fulfilled and compare the total by hand
    Dropped: Nothing, the metrics matched
  5. Prompt 2: restyleDark theme with blue and gold accents, layout and filters kept
  6. Live dashboardUpdates automatically when new orders are added

What Copilot put on the dashboard

  1. Key metrics: total revenue, fulfilled orders, average order value, units sold
  2. Charts: monthly sales trend, revenue by cookie type and by region, order status mix, top customers
  3. Interactive filters with a reset button

By the numbers

500orders in the sample data
$41,586revenue from 424 fulfilled orders
$10,000test order added (5,000 cookies at $2)

Do it yourself

You need Copilot in Excel; available features may vary by Microsoft 365 subscription.

  1. Open your workbook and click the Copilot icon at the bottom right
  2. Leave Allow Editing selected (Plan and Chat Only are the other modes)
  3. Paste prompt 1 to create the dashboard on a new worksheet
  4. Try the filters, then check the key metrics against your raw data
  5. Paste prompt 2 to apply a dark theme
  6. Add a new row to the data and confirm the dashboard updates

Both prompts are in the video description.

Tips from the video

  • Always double-check AI-generated numbers, especially before business decisions.
  • The dashboard sheet is a special type: you can't edit cells or move charts directly, so ask Copilot to make changes.
  • Restyling doesn't require a rebuild; one prompt changed the whole look.
  • Choose Plan if you want to review what Copilot intends to do first.
