Prompt
Start a ChatGPT Voice conversation and say: act as an interviewer for a [job title] role, ask me one question at a time, and give me feedback after each answer.

Visual breakdown

ChatGPT Voice is a live back-and-forth you can interrupt and steer as you go. Give it a role, like an interviewer, your manager or a Spanish tutor, and you practice the conversation out loud with feedback instead of just typing.

The problem: Typing to a chatbot doesn't let you rehearse an interview, a presentation, a tough conversation or a new language out loud.

How a voice practice session works

  1. Open ChatGPT VoiceiPhone, Android app or web; the Voice icon in the message box
  2. Start VoiceAllow the microphone the first time, then select Start Voice
  3. Set the rolee.g. interview me for a marketing manager job, one question at a time
  4. ChatGPT plays the partAsks, pushes back or speaks slowly in the target language
  5. Interrupt and steerCut in, ask follow-ups, ask for shorter answers or easier difficulty
  6. FeedbackFeedback after each answer, or mistakes explained in English
  7. Real spoken practiceYou rehearse out loud, not just read or memorize

Role-play prompts from the video

  1. "Pretend you're interviewing me for a marketing manager position. Ask one question at a time and give feedback after each answer."
  2. "I'm going to practice the opening of my presentation. Tell me where I sound unclear or could be more concise."
  3. "Pretend you're my manager and I'm asking for a raise. Push back on some of my arguments."
  4. "Let's have a beginner-level conversation in Spanish. Speak slowly, and explain my mistakes in English."

Run your own practice session

Voice is for live conversation; use dictation instead if you just want to type faster.

  1. Open ChatGPT and tap the Voice icon in the message box
  2. Allow microphone access, then select Start Voice
  3. Say the role you want it to play and how to give feedback
  4. Answer out loud; interrupt to adjust or ask for shorter answers
  5. In Settings, Voice: turn on Background Conversations, pick a voice and set your language

For languages, ask it to repeat phrases more slowly or role-play the person at a café, and raise the difficulty as you improve.

Tips from the video

  • Voice is not dictation: dictation turns speech into text you edit; Voice talks back live.
  • You don't need one perfect question. Talk naturally and interrupt to change direction.
  • Tell it to keep answers short unless you ask for more, or to hold its response while you think out loud.
  • Set your preferred language if it often misunderstands you.
  • Background Conversations keeps talking while you use another app or your phone is locked.
